NYC Arresting Architecture - Five Franklin Place (GALLERY)

“Five Franklin Place” by Dutch architect Ben van Berkel of UNStudio has all the marking of a hit in the Big Apple. Architecturally interesting, dark, sleek and ever so slightly subtle with its visual impact, this space cleverly uses its staggered black metal facade to obscure the activities of its residence, unlike most fishbowl style glass towers we are used to seeing. The interior takes some interesting design direction as well. Van Berkel adds “The apartments at Five Franklin Place do not follow a strong grid. They are organically designed in how the stairs swoop upward, how the balcony loops you back indoors. There’s an idea of looping around the apartments, without many dead ends, so that all of the space really accommodates life and the flow of life.”

Wooden Hull Leads to Wood Bath - Boat Not Included

Swiss designer Markus Farner came up with the ingenious idea for his solid wood baths when he was busy completing a yacht for a client. The inspection was done interestingly. The client himself sat inside the wooden hull and found it very relaxing, so the idea of craeting these wood baths was born.

China Gateway Airport Focused on Green

A landmark development is the proposed construction of a new terminal at Shenzen Bao’an International Airport in China. Positioned as a gateway to China and designed by architects Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas, the terminal will no doubt be a sleek transit destination. What has captured our attention is the incredible double skin canopy intended to let patterned natural light into the space, and significantly reduce energy consumption.

Wonderful World of Cubicles - If You Can Afford This, You Don’t Belong in a Cubicle

Check out the fancy woodwork in Jared Nielsen’s cube, decked out with a dark cherry hardwood floor, and luxurious red mahogany paneling on all four walls. Notice the fluted end caps, smooth transition from hardwood floor to carpeted office, and the precise woodwork all around.

He tops it off with a carved desk and an oriental rug, plunking down in his soft-comfy leather-clad throne from which he can command his web marketing empire. Sure beats coffee-stained gray carpeting and the woolly cubicle walls that are so familiar to millions of worker bees the world over.
